Achievements
MVS SYSTEM PROGRAMMING
- Performed upgrades and maintenance to the MVS operating systems of several S.A. Government agencies, and also for a German customer during an 18 month assignment there.
- Created and maintained Y2K test systems at the worksite of a very large German customer.
SECURITY ADMINISTRATION
- Established the role of administering the RACF security subsystem (S.A. Government agency).
- Trained 3 successors to that role, and provided ongoing advisory support for several years.
- Restored order in a situation of severe chaos, on one customer system.
DATA STORAGE ADMINISTRATION
- Provided support for daily and weekly tasks for data backup and migration etc.
- Provided advice and assistance to customers with problems.
- Administered the Tape Management System.
APPLICATION PROGRAMMING
- Provided support and improvements for in-house technical application software.
- Designed and wrote an application subsystem for a customer’s groundwater modelling system.
- Wrote an application system for a forestry client, including the redesign of a faulty specification, enabling accurate assessment of inventory (e.g. after fire damage).
SOFTWARE AUDIT COMPLIANCE
- Analysed and corrected situations where existing security rules did not conform to the company’s internal standards. This provides assurance to customers that all data accesses are strictly limited to a “business need” basis.
- Created batch job decks to quickly produce the reports to prove compliance (required every 6 months), and enabling less skilled personnel to run the reports.

MVS System Programmer, Mitsubishi Motors Jan – May 2006
4 month contract assisting the System Programmer (Vectra Corp.) in upgrading the z/OS system.
Service Centre Analyst, EDS Australia June 2000 – April 2004
Member of the Operations Support Group at the Glenside data centre. Duties varied, including technical advice to other members of the group, and responsibility for the group's software Audit Compliance. For a short period in 2001, I was on loan to the Security team as a RACF consultant for their Audit Compliance.
MVS System Programmer, EDS Deutschland Oct 1998 – April 2000
System administration duties as a member of the MVS team at the Rüsselsheim data centre, with particular responsibility for the KHS (Dortmund) client system. I upgraded this MVS system for Y2K readiness, created the system documentation, and performed a major correction to the RACF profiles (for audit compliance).
MVS System Programmer, EDS Deutschland Y2K Project July – Sept 1998
Seven weeks at the Deutsche Bank data centre (one of Europe's largest), with sole responsibility for maintaining the EDS Y2K test OS/390 systems and creating a new one.
MVS System Programmer, EDS Australia April 1996 – July 1998
Responsibilities expanded to include Operating System upgrades on several MVS platforms outsourced by the state government. Substantial participation in migration to the Glenside data centre of MVS systems run by Courts Administration Authority, and Dept. for Housing & Urban Development.
MVS System Programmer, S.A. Government Oct 1982 - April 1996
Installation and maintenance of MVS and associated components of the operating system.
Assembly language programming is an implicit part of the job.
Assistant to the Data Manager. Duties included providing knowledge and assistance to customers experiencing serious difficulties with their files.
RACF Security Administrator for the first 5 years, following which I was constantly consulted (by the Security branch and customers) about the most difficult data security questions.
